A friend recently mentioned that he was behind on my substack, and was daunted as to where to start. I am not the most prodigious writer in terms of sheer output, but it can be daunting to follow my scattered and generally unrelated (other than broad strokes) articles. I figured it would be nice at this point to break them down into sections here.
The Coeling
(FREE) The lynch-pin for my current understanding of the Hen Ogledd, outlining a proposed high-kingship based around Hadrian’s Wall, and the situation that led to the possibility of an Arthur like figure.
(PAID) This Article tackles the question of ‘Why Arthwys’. It is paywalled, and not necessary for context for most articles here, but in my opinion still essential reading.
(PAID) Looking at Brythonic Kingship, and what was important to the real Arthur.
(FREE) The Penteulu and it’s role in Brythonic society, with implications for Arthur.
(FREE) Possible reference to Coeling in Y Gododdin. This is slightly out of date, but is still relevant.
(FREE) Possibilities for the Battle of Camlann, where Arthur died.
(FREE) The Battle of Catraeth, unraveling a tangled web.
Alt Clut and the Picts
(PAID) Arthur as a potential over-king of the Picts
(FREE) Delving into the veracity of the Pictish Regnal Lists.
(PAID) Unravelling the web of 7th century Pictish Kings.
(FREE) Alt Clut and another possible High-Kingship in the Hen Ogledd.
Choose your own adventure.
After that it’s all up to you. I’d highly recommend the articles in the section here, titled Warlords of the Britons, giving you an idea for some of the individuals who lived during the period, as well as some of their material culture. From there I’d highly recommend the guest articles from my friends Wickbam and
. My series on Arthurian Tropes is also informative, but not neccessary. From there, you can pick through everything else however you like.
Great idea to organise for an over arching narrative. Nice 🙂
The labor may be too much effort, but you could split your articles into their own sections on your Substack page itself, through dashboard settings for website branding. You can add tags and boxes etc. Just a suggestion
